April Member Meeting
Our April meeting will be held in the lounge of the Veteran's Memorial Building. The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM. Come early for coffee, cookies and friendship.
Our featured speaker will be Dee Owens who will describe “Discovering 1850s Overland Trails through El Dorado County". Owens is a retired Buckeye School teacher. Since retiring she has been active with the Oregon-California Trails Association as the California-Nevada Chapter Webmaster and has participated on emigrant trail mapping teams. She is also a research volunteer at the El Dorado County Historical Museum.
Tens of thousands of hardy pioneers crossed El Dorado County on five emigrant trails during the largest mass migration in American history in the 1850s. Where were these trails? How did they cross the Sierra? Is there anything left of them? Dee Owens will explain how the Oregon-California Trails Association works with the Eldorado National Forest to locate, mark, and map the emigrant trails in El Dorado County. She will show how new advances in technology help locate trails that were heavily traveled but have now disappeared into the forest.
